Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean Description:
The goal to develop a digital data format
base containing all available bathymetric
data north of 64 degrees
North, for use by
geographers, researchers, and institutions
requiring accurate knowledge and detailed
bathymetric charts of the shape and
depth
of the Arctic Seabed.
The Bathymetric Mapping
undertaking initiated in 1997, consisted
of eleven institutions in eight countries:
USA, Canada, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark,
Norway, Germany and Russia.
Expediting the project
with financial support or endorsement were
made by the following:
-
NGDC - US National
Geophysical Data Center
-
ONR - US Office of
Naval Research
-
IOC -
Intergovernmental Oceanographic
Commission
-
IASC - International
Arctic Science Committee
-
IHO - International
Hydrographic Organization
The NGDC
database is the primary source for hip
track data deriving both from surface
vessels and submarines.
With new
technology development in data
visualization combined with modern mapping
technologies enhances our ability to
extract information about earth processes
with 3D
GIS mapping software such as our Global
Mapper which supports the import
of this data
in the netCDF format.
Grids of
geophysical data viewed as color-coded
shaded relief in 3-D, offer in many
aspects a better representation for
interpretation purposes than a contour
map. A digital grid is also suitable for
quantitative analysis and often serves as
a base for quantitative modeling.
Our 3D
Global Mapper GIS mapping software will
allow you to do world globe
bathymetric
mapping or topographic bathymetric of Hawaii,
Michigan, Florida Peninsula or Caribbean
and more with a free
download.
More
information about the bathymetric
definition may be found in the IBCAO
reference and user's guide provided below.
