| Format USGS Digital Elevation Model DEM | DEM Description: A digital elevation model or DEM basically is a digital file comprising different terrain elevation data for spatial relations (ground positions) at regularly spaced horizontal intervals. USGS develops the digital elevation model in five different product styles.
- 7.5-Minute DEM 30- x 30-meter data spacing
- 1-Degree DEM 3- x 3-arc-second data spacing
- 2-Arc-Second DEM 2- x 2-arc-second data spacing
- 15-Minute Alaska DEM 2- x 3-arc-second data spacing
- 7.5-Minute Alaska DEM 1- x 2-arc-second data spacing
Even though all five DEM styles are structured identical, they differ in sampling intervals in reference to coverage of areas, accuracy and the geographic reference system. The real difference in characteristic is the data spacing or sampling interval. Available for free? 1:250,000 scale (also known as 1-degree DEM) data are available for free. Other scales can be purchased from USGS Earth Science Information Centers.
