Binary Imagery Formats

Binary Imagery Description:  Gis information and imagery stored by hardware and software in their most elemental forms and distributed in simple binary formats such as:

Binary Interleaved by Line (BIL)

Binary Sequential (BSQ)

Binary Interleaved Pixel (BIP)

These files are usually accompanied by a .hdr file which describes the layout and formatting of the file.

Global Mapper requires this .hdr file in addition to the .bil, .bsq, or .bip file in order to load the file.

Available for free? Sometimes, this is a generic format used by many different data providers, so the cost of the data in these formats varies.
