ASPRS LIDAR LAS Files

Description: The ASPRS LIDAR LAS binary format conforming to the ASPRS LIDAR data
exchange format standard named with an LAS extension
are used for storing 3D point data,
supported by our 3D GIS mapping software Global Mapper, which combines IMU, GPS, and

laser pulse range data to produce X, Y, and Z point data.

ASPRS LIDAR intended to provide open data formats
for allowing a variety of software vendors to create
LAS files referred to as generating software or
user software
for reading and writing to the LAS files
such as our Global Mapper gis mapping software.

Our 3D GIS mapping software Global Mapper v6.07
and higher can directly import this binary file format
that's not complex but still maintains your specific
information and view it either as an elevation-colored
point cloud or a 3D surface.

The Binary Data Format consisting of:

  • Public Header Block: File Signature, GUID data 1-4, Version Major and Minor, etc.

  • Variable Length Records: Record Signature, User ID and Record ID,
    Record Length After Header, etc.

  • Point Data: X, Y, Z, Intensity, Scan Direction Flag, Edge of Flight Line, Classification, etc.

Available for free? Varies.
